Our school has been running a very successful ‘Mentor Program’ for some time. This program involves trained volunteers coming into the school to meet a child and spend an hour with them to talk, and do some activities or school work. The mentor works under supervision of the classroom teacher, but may spend time with the child in the library, the playground or other area within the school. The mentor meets with the child on a weekly basis. Our experience has shown that the program is very beneficial for children in improving their self-esteem, ability to socialize and general engagement with school.
